Olivier Houzé is the managing director of KAPPA Engineering. He joined Flopetrol-Johnston in 1983, and served as a well test field engineer in the Middle East and a software project leader in France. He cofounded KAPPA in 1987 and has been its managing director since 1991.

Identification, prediction, and understanding of conformance problems are vital in the optimal design of improved and enhanced oil recovery processes. This book brings together the topics of conformance problems and conformance-improvement techniques; correct application of conformance-improvement techniques can lead to greatly improved oil recovery from conventional oil reservoirs.
As a volunteer, use your knowledge and experience to influence SPE programs and other activities. You can also enhance your leadership skills while meeting and working with other SPE members from across the globe. There are many opportunities to choose from, regardless of your technical interest, location, or experience level.
In 2012, SPE International awarded funds to six young faculty members to carry out cutting edge research. These six were selected from a large number of extremely competitive applicants. The project is now finishing one year.

Selected for algorithms and procedures developed by Dr. Larsen that form the linchpin of many commercial software well testing packages today, Dr. Larsen's contributions to the technical literature concerning the evaluation of subsurface reservoirs are an extraordinary record of pioneering contributions. Over the past 30 years Dr. Larsen has played a significant role in our understanding of pressure transient analysis and production logging. Dr. Larsen's focus has been on the evaluation of reservoirs in the North Sea with particular attention, quite understandably, to fields of interest to Statoil.
Robert A. Wattenbarger, Texas A&M, College Station, Texas, USA
Dr. Robert A. Wattenbarger has more than 35 years' experience in the petroleum industry. Reservoir engineering and computer software have been his specialties, with emphasis on reservoir simulation and well test analysis. He was vice president of Scientific Software Corporation in Denver for 10 years after being involved in the formation of that company.
Please join SPE in congratulating the 2012 SPE International Award recipients. The SPE Board of Directors approved the 2012 International Award recipients at their recent meeting. Seventeen international award committees recommended these winners to the board because of their outstanding and significant technical, professional, and service contributions to SPE and the petroleum industry. The winners were chosen from a pool of first rate candidates. SPE President Ganesh Thakur will present the awards to the winners at ATCE in San Antonio Texas.

Last year in this focus on CO2 applications, I (as others have) connected enhanced oil recovery (EOR) as an enabling business foundation and a possible way forward to accomplish carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a business investment.
