PANEL SESSION: MANAGING CARBON
There is a growing consensus in the scientific and political arena that a
significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is required to prevent
disastrous global warming. With world energy consumption predicted to increase
60% by 2020-2030 and renewable energies still providing only a small fraction
of demand in this timeframe, what can be done to address the biggest
environmental issue we will face in our lifetime?
Among the solutions proposed are substantially increased energy efficiency;
nuclear power plants; carbon capture and storage; carbon taxes and carbon
trading; and substitution of “dirty” coal and oil with “clean, green” natural
gas.
However, is society willing to pay the price to fund the transition to a low
carbon society? Do we need a complete paradigm shift in our consumer driven,
energy intensive lifestyles? What role can the petroleum industry play? Is our
contribution simply limited to reducing our own carbon footprint or are we
uniquely positioned to play a vital role in the reduction of the world’s
greenhouse gas emissions?
An expert panel will address these and other critically important issues
related to our industry’s role in the sustainable management of carbon.
