Ensuring Reliable SCAL Data for Reservoir Modeling

Course Description

Special Core Analysis, SCAL data has a direct impact on the way fluids are allocated and distributed in the reservoir simulation models, which would directly impact reservoirs’ STOIIP estimation and their distribution. Moreover, it directly affects the performance of secondary and EOR flooding processes, and in turn impacts the accuracy of the oil and gas reserve estimates, and the management of these reserves. Therefore, SCAL data could be considered as one of the most critical reservoir input data for reservoir simulation models.

This course will shed light on the theoretical and experimental background of SCAL data. It will explain the concept of reservoir wettability and different factors that could induce changes in reservoir wettability. Further, the course will cover the concept of capillary pressure and its associated hysteresis for different wettability conditions, followed by the concepts of two phase water/oil and gas/oil relative permeability curves and how to generate three relative permeability data for water wet, mixed and oil wet reservoirs. Furthermore, the course will clarify the saturation end point of both capillary pressure and relative curves as a function of reservoir heterogeneity and wettability. Finally, the course will support the idea of reservoir wettability profile, when will it happen and how to deal with it.

Instructor

Shawket Ghedan is currently a Reservoir Simulation Advisor with CMG. He has more than 22 years of both academic and industrial experience in the area of reservoir management and modeling. Ghedan is supervising and modeling various applications of thermal recovery processes for heavy oil reservoirs as well as modeling oil and gas production from conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Previously, he held associate professor positions with the Petroleum Institute of Abu Dhabi and University of Baghdad. He also held senior reservoir simulation positions with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. Furthermore, he was senior instructor and consultant with NExT-Schlumberger.

Ghedan is currently interested in the area of SCAL data for heavy oil reservoirs, thermal recovery processes in carbonate naturally fractured reservoirs, as well as chemical flooding. He has experience in reservoir characterization, and modeling for waterflooding, and hydrocarbon gas and CO₂-compositional flooding, applied especially for carbonate reservoirs.

Ghedan has authored more than 40 technical papers, and has taught many reservoir engineering and reservoir modeling courses world-wide. He holds a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from University of Baghdad, and ME and PhD degrees in Reservoir Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. Shawket is currently involved in a number of SPE international activities. He was SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2005-2006. He was awarded the 2009 MENA Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Technical Award, 2010 SPE Outstanding Technical Editor Award, and 2011 MENA Regional Distinguished Petroleum Engineering Faculty Award.
