Course Description

The execution phase of industrial projects such as oil and gas projects consists of detailed engineering, procurement and construction, normally known as EPC and starts after final investment decision by the owners. Companies who provide an integrated engineering, procurement and construction services are called EPC contractors. Managing the EPC contracts are usually complicated and require special expertise and knowledge. This course will provide an overview of such expertise and knowledge. In particular, the attributes of EPC business, EPC project lifecycle, phases and gates are explained, the flow of engineering activities and interconnections between engineering disciplines are described, and the fundamentals of project procurement management and administration, logistics, bidding and contracting are reviewed. Also major construction management activities are explained and tools and techniques to monitor and control project performance are introduced.

Instructors

Reza Dehghan holds a PhD in civil engineering – project management (Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary) and a MSc in chemical engineering, (University of Tehran). He has worked as a project engineer and project controls specialist for a number of EPC and owner companies in oil, gas and petrochemical projects for the last 15 years. He is the President of the Calgary Section of AACE (The Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering).

He is a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary, Department of Civil Engineering, Center for Project Management Excellence. He has taught a variety of topics including project management, planning and control, engineering management, and construction management. He is also a regular presenter in academic and industrial seminars and conferences. He has developed several course curriculums for different educational institutes, including South Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).

Ashok Kumar, PMP, is a senior Project Manager from Hatch Ltd. He has an extensive 28 years of experience in engineering, project and construction management. He has gained considerable knowledge working in several management positions on projects up to $26 billion for world-class oil and gas refineries, oils sands, mining, potash and metal plants. Ashok has lived and worked in a variety of countries, including India, Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia, and has established a successful record of leading multidiscipline and multicultural project teams across the globe. Ashok has built a solid reputation for managing and integrating complex process equipment packages, and providing overall project leadership and construction management.

Kamran Hazini holds a PhD degree in Civil Engineering-Project Management from University of Calgary. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta and a certified project management professional (PMP®) with more than 13 years of work experience in planning and project controls of oil, gas and power industry projects. He holds a BA in industrial engineering and his work experience includes 8 years on oil, gas and petrochemical mega-projects in Middle East and 5 years on Canadian oilsands and energy sector projects. His main areas of expertise are project planning, scheduling, cost controlling, change management, risk analysis, resource management, and earned value management. He is currently a Project Controls Manager at WorleyParsons Canada.

Behmanesh Sharif is project services consultant with 15+ years’ experience in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. He has experienced working for both EPC contractors and operators on various mega projects in the capacity of project manager, project controls manager, contracts/claim manager and PMO member. He has been a certified PMP from PMI since 2006 and holds a M.Sc. in industrial engineering as well as civil engineering which helped him incorporating this technical background into his extensive knowledge of project development, international procurement, contract administration, claim management, cost budgeting  and control, planning/scheduling, risk analysis and performance measurement.

He has conducted 50+ workshops and courses in different areas of project management during the past 7 years and has the honor of training more than 1000 professionals. Some of his courses include: PMP preparation workshop, cost management, risk management, project finance, project delivery methods, effective contractual negotiation, claim management and delay analysis techniques.
