Course Description
This course introduces the role of the IADC HSE Case in managing major accident hazards and what tools can be applied to successfully implement a strong strategy with respect to the ongoing management of operational and well specific hazards.

Why Attend
This course provides an overview of the IADC guidelines with respect to operational HSE cases, supporting process for the assessment of major accident hazards and how HSE cases can be operationalized with respect to specific well planning. The program will also address API Recommended Practice (RP)96 for offshore well design, drilling and completion operations in deepwater.

The class is intended for drilling managers, offshore installation managers, drilling engineers, HSE advisors, and any others who would like to learn about management of major accident hazards in drilling.

Instructor
Mark Cowan has 28 years of experience as a rig engineer, project engineer, senior safety engineer, location manager, lead safety engineer and head of discipline. His service has been extended to a series of service companies including WorleyParsons, Risktec, Altinex, Aberdeen Drilling Consultants, Forasal Foramac Drilling and Eastman Christensen. He possesses professional skills and personal attributes in the oil and gas industry and has extensive experience in consultancy, client, operations and design engineering environments with a strong focus on the successful delivery of major accident hazard management solutions to a range of industry groups.
Since 1984, he has been actively involved in developing integrity standards including operating philosophies, technical criteria and procedures. He has been involved in preparing and implementing risk management strategies, developing methodologies, completing hazard assessment, drafting concurrent operations manuals, as well as initial well scheduling risk assessment for conceptual well development. Cowan's 28 years of expertise has been garnered from a variety of projects with operating companies such as Brunei Shell Petroleum, Shell Sabah, Sarawak Shell Berhad, Petronas Carigali, Petrofac Malaysia, Murphy Oil Corp, Amoco North Sea Drilling Group and several others.
Cowan holds an MS in Petroleum Technology from Aberdeen University, and BA (Hons) in Management from The Robert Gordon University. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is also a registered practitioner and trainer of Tripod Beta.
