United Nations Sustainability Development Goals

What are they? How does oil and gas play a role? How has the industry contributed to progress? What initiatives are underway?

In 2015, the UN Member States adopted The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. This agenda outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and called on all countries to work together on attaining these goals. Read more about the UN goals for Affordable and Clean Energy.

In 2017, IPIECA (the Global Oil and Gas Industry Association for Environmental and Social Issues), the International Finance Corporation, and the UN Development Programme, collaborated to outline the role of the oil and gas industry in each of the 17SDGs.
