The SPE CEDEP IOGP Safety Leadership Academy is a professionally accredited training programme dedicated to the needs of the oil and gas industry. Participants will develop leadership capabilities for changing the safety paradigm and make ZERO a reality within their organisations and beyond. The program is the realisation and activation through leadership of the SPE ‘Getting to Zero and Beyond’ report, ERM 144 Report – Global Safety Survey, IOGP 452 and 453 reports and CEDEP’s extensive expertise on leadership development and learning. The uniqueness is the gathering of participants from across the industry over a 3-phase program to work together on common and emerging safety challenges and opportunities with exposure to world class experts on leadership and safety putting cutting edge theories and models into practice. The program includes individual and group coaching, going beyond traditional safety leadership and preparing managers to lead in a transforming world.

Topics Covered: The program is uniquely built around Leading Self, Leading Others and Leading the Organization and includes foundational safety leadership and organization concepts including Safety II, Systems Thinking and Complex Systems Leadership, Transformational, Disruptive and Emergent Leaderships.

Main Objectives: Develop leadership capabilities for oil & gas industry leaders to shift paradigms and make zero accidents a reality within their organizations and beyond.

Learning Journey

Community building is a key feature of the programme and will start prior to the Phase 1 residential session. 

In a peer group learning environment, our faculty of thought leaders will facilitate a series of workshops that will include talks, practical activities to use tools and techniques, as well as real-world strategic challenges, a methodology developed at CEDEP. Experiential learning will also lead the participants outside of the classroom and their comfort zone for an immersive experience to increase self-awareness and fundamental change. Your own reality and operational challenges will form the key material for your learning journey.

Course Length

We have devised a three-phase approach: 

  • Phase 1 of the programme is an immersive 3-day residential session.
  • Phase 2 is a 3-month duration intersession for participants to apply the learnings in their work environment.
  • Phase 3 is a second immersive 3-day residential session to complete the programme. 

In this in-depth highly interactive programme, participants prepare for the challenges emerging in an industry experiencing significant changes in a world that is becoming more and more uncertain and complex. They explore cutting-edge leadership concepts and safety management practices to build a new mindset and culture needed in the journey to get to zero accidents.

PHASE 1: Residential 3-Day Course; Leading Self & Others

  • Understanding the limits of modern management and its impact on the way we manage safety
  • Leading Mental Models Shift: Moving from compliance to trust
  • Learning from normal work: Human factors and Human Performance
  • Creating Trust and Psychological Safety
  • Understanding self: Emotional Intelligence
  • Working on real-world strategic challenges as red-thread

PHASE 2: Apply the Learnings (3 months)

Participants return to their work environment and apply their learnings to strategic challenges. This will be supported by virtual meetings: action labs, webinars, calls with our program director.

PHASE 3: Residential 3-Day Course; Safety Leadership  

  • Adopting a sociological approach to understand behaviors and act on weak signals
  • Getting more from what we do: Learning and applying a novel and effective way of observing and engaging
  • Rethinking HSE Communications and why it matters
  • Resilience for performance: managing energy & well-being
  • Workshop on your strategic challenges

Who Attends

The SPE IOGP CEDEP Leadership Academy is for middle and senior-level leaders who play a role in the safety management and conditions in which their people work. These leaders may be operational managers or Health, Safety Environment (HSE) managers in the oil and gas industry and its direct value chain.

56 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are awarded for this course.

The Academy Includes:

  • Six days of in-person, immersive learning and facilitated workshops from world experts in Safety Leadership and Executive Leadership Development. The six days of immersive learning are divided over 2 three-day residential sessions.

  • SPE-CEDEP-IOGP Safety Leadership certification on successful completion of the training program.
  • Membership of the CEDEP alumni community and associated benefits

Instructors will include external faculties and O&G guest speakers.

Application Information

Participants at this academy are selected by the Academy Committee based on your qualifications. Attendance is limited to maximize each person’s opportunity to learn.

Accepted applicants will receive their registration form and other materials within two weeks of the application deadline. For those requiring visas to attend the academy, please ensure that you leave sufficient time for your visa to be processed.

CEDEP Cancellation Policy

For Open Enrolment Programmes (OEPs), in the event of absence, postponement or withdrawal during training/module/period, the following compensation is due:

  • 1 month before the start of the programme: 50% of the training costs and related services
  • Less than 1 week before the start of the programme: 100% of the training costs and related services
  • During the training: the full cost is due.

For Company Specific Programmes (CSPs), the cancellation or postponement of a programme/module/period is payable (except for certain cases) according to the following conditions:

  • 6-4 months before the start of the programme: 25% of the training costs
  • 4-1 months before the start of the programme: 50% of the training costs
  • Less than one month: 100% of the training costs and 50% of the related services

Postponement of a programme/module/period within the same calendar year is possible depending on availability; otherwise, the same fees are due.

For digital programmes, the above rules also apply in case of cancellation or postponement of a module/intervention/event.

For programmes taking place off CEDEP campus, the above percentages apply to training costs and all related services such as hotel reservations, travel expenses…., except in particular cases linked to the more stringent general conditions of third parties.

Absence, cancellation or postponement of a participant in a residential course:

For all cases, any change made less than 7 days before the start of the programme/module/period will result in the invoicing of the entire amount of accommodation, catering, etc…

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be received no later than 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after the 14-day window will not be refunded. Refunds will not be given due to no show situations.

Training sessions attached to SPE conferences and workshops follow the cancellation policies stated on the event information page. Please check that page for specific cancellation information.

SPE reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule courses at will. Notification of changes will be made as quickly as possible; please keep this in mind when arranging travel, as SPE is not responsible for any fees charged for cancelling or changing travel arrangements.

We reserve the right to substitute course instructors as necessary.
