Cookie Policy

This policy details how the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) uses cookies. The terms of our Cookie Policy apply to SPE members and to the public who interact with us online.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on a user’s computer. SPE uses cookies to help identify you and your preferences when you return to SPE.org to deliver content that is specific to your interests and to keep track of your preferences. Cookies are not programs and are not known to be damaging to your computer. The cookies set by SPE do personally identify* you; however, they simply permit SPE's web site to know what your preferences are. They also provide us with anonymous aggregated information so that we can make sure our website is easy to navigate, identify the areas of interest to visitors and generally improve the website and our services. Cookies set on any website are only visible to that website and not to any other websites you may visit.

Why did I see a pop-up about cookies when I first entered the SPE website?

Logging into and using the SPE website required that you accept cookies before entering the website.  If you wish to remove cookies that have been sent to your web browser and stored on your computer, you may do so.  See Manage Your Cookies below.

When are cookies created?

Writing data to a cookie is usually done when a new webpage is loaded. When your browser accesses the site, SPE's server checks your browser settings to see if it is permissible to store this identification information on your computer.

How long does a cookie last?

Most cookies used by SPE are temporary; that is, they remain only for the duration of your session on the SPE website. SPE does write some cookies that remain after you end your session, such as items loaded into your shopping cart in OnePetro. This is designed to assist members whose session is interrupted before they can complete their purchase.

Here is a list of the common cookies we use and what we use them for.

We use these types of cookies to monitor our websites performance and how their users may use it. These cookies do not collect information that identifies a user.
