Oil and Gas Field Development

Course Description

Despite the recent global pandemic, energy demand is expected to rise in the near future as economic activities start bouncing back. As a consequence, a continuously increasing need for energy becomes inevitable. Meanwhile, more and more oil & gas discoveries are located in remote areas with fewer infrastructures, such as offshore or even deep offshore. Thus, it is important to execute a thorough field development to optimise the resources and shorten the timespan between discovery and first hydrocarbon, while mitigating the uncertainties and technical challenges.

During this course, participants will design a field development plan after an oil and gas discovery. This preliminary phase of development will provide data with high uncertainty. Thus, the analogy becomes essential to design a development plan. This training course will include a half-day outcrop visit that enables participants to acquire hands-on experience in comprehending outcrop analogy, and to directly observe the grological uncertainties. Additionally, two Mahakam oil and gas projects will act as analogs to help participants illuminate some ideas for their field development plans.

This course is designed to emphasise hands-on experience by offering the knowledge to interpret geological data for estimating reserves and critical understanding in making decisions on field development strategies through exercises, case studies, and discussions. These objectives can be achieved with the help of professionals within the oil and gas industry by experience sharing in the manner of a more pragmatic approach. The topics covered in this course comprise of:

  • Field development introduction
  • Analogy from existing development projects: Romeo case study
  • Hydrocarbon in-place exercise
  • Reserves estimation
  • Appraisal and field development plan exercise
  • Case study final presentation

Henricus Herwin is the Vice President Technical Excellence & Coordination in Pertamina Hulu Energi. He has 20 years of working experience in Indonesia, Nigeria, Norway, France & Australia as a reservoir engineer and geosciences manager, covering fast track development, mature field development and unconventional projects. Henricus is a member of SPE Asia Pacific Technical Advisory Board, and has MSc. in Petroleum Engineering & Project Development from IFP-School.

Supriady is the Manager of Well Operation, Petrophysics & Data Management - Zone 9 in Pertamina Hulu Indonesia. He has 20 years of working experiences as Operation & Development Geologist in all Mahakam Fields and TOTAL HQ. Supriady has BSc. in Geology, UPN Yogyakarta and master’s degree in Petroleum Geology from ITB Bandung.

Yan Muhazir is the Senior GGR Subsurface Development - Area 1 Zone 8 in Pertamina Hulu Indonesia. He has 18 years of working experience in Mahakam and Total E&P France as a reservoir engineer and received BSc. in Petroleum Engineering from ITB.

Andy Kristianto is the Lead Specialist Development Geology in Pertamina Hulu Energi. He has 11 years of working experience as reservoir geologist in a complex deltaic environment with 2 years of exposure in carbonate field, UAE. Andy has MSc. In Petroleum Geology from IFP-School, and BSc. in Geophysical Engineering, UGM.

Irfan Taufik Rau is the Senior Analyst D&P Planning & Evaluation in Pertamina Hulu Energi. He has 6 years of working experience with exposures in upstream economics, production monitoring, operations and reservoir engineering studies in Handil, Tunu and Peciko fields. He has MSc. in Petroleum Economics and Management from IFP-School, MSc. in Mineral and Energy Economics from the Colorado School of Mines, and BSc. in Petroleum Engineering from ITB.
