Thermal Reservoir Simulation for SAGD


Disciplines: Reservoir

Course Description

This course covers reservoir simulation theory using the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process. It includes a discussion of major engineering concepts such as thief zones, overlying water and gas, and water legs. About one third of the class time is spent on a series of practical examples that give participants hands-on experience using STARS and Exotherm thermal simulation software.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Input data and perform thermal reservoir simulations with consistent results
  • Discuss basic simulation theory and perform simple heat flow calculations
  • Understand use of K values, viscosity data, stream properties, and reservoir properties such as permeability, relative permeability, operation conditions and controls.

Why Attend

There is almost no material about SAGD in conventional reservoir simulation texts, since the technology is so new.  This course is an excellent opportunity to learn the latest technology from a recognized expert in the field.

Who Attends

This course is for entry-level reservoir engineers, and for geologists and production engineers with some SAGD experience.

Special Requirements

Attendees must bring a laptop to class.

CEUs

4.0 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are awarded for this 5-day course.

Instructor

M.R. (Mike) Carlson, founded Applied Reservoir Enterprises Ltd., a petroleum engineering consulting firm specializing in reservoir engineering, numerical simulation, and economic evaluations in 1999. He has more than 35 years of experience in the petroleum industry, working for such corporations as Amoco Canada, Home Oil, Scientific Software-Intercomp, McDaniel & Associates Consultants Ltd, Silverwing Energy Inc., Petro-Canada, RPS Energy Canada and Alberta Oil Sands. A Geological Engineer from the University of Toronto, he is a member of the SPE, APEGGA, CWLS, and the CSPG. He has written over 25 papers and served as technical program committee chairman for the CIPC, SPE Gas Condensate Forum in League City, was a director of the National Board of the Petroleum Society of CIM, and was on the Industry Advisory Committee for the University of Regina Petroleum Engineering. He is the author of Practical Reservoir Simulation, (2003, PennWell). He has taught courses in 18 countries on reservoir simulation, reservoir management, and thermal reservoir simulation. Currently, he is actively involved in the development of a Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) projects in north-eastern Alberta working on caprock and solvent assisted SAGD. ARE continues to provide conventional reservoir engineering as well.
