March 2024

Dear Friends,

The year has commenced with many value adding activities in the various Sections across Africa.
I hope you are finding them useful and engaging. The organizers put a lot of effort to providing our members with a wide variety of content across the continent both in-person and virtual so that our members gain the full advantage of their SPE membership.

March 8th was International Women’s Day, and it was gratifying to see the different sections roll out targeted activities to celebrate with the Women of SPE! Most exciting was a collaborative event hosted by FOUR Sections: Ghana, Vienna, Warri and Maputo! I’m always inspired when Sections across geographies collaborate in this way and I hope to see more of it.

IWD Women's Event

While it’s impossible to list all the events taking place each month across our 16 Sections in Africa, there are some special events I would like to highlight to mark your calendars:

The Student technical symposium and exhibition taking place in University of Uyo and sponsored by the SPE Nigeria Council (featuring all 5 Sections within Nigeria) takes place on the 14th to 16th of March. There will be panel sessions, technical sessions, an energy challenge as well as the much-anticipated PetroQuz and Student paper contest.

A similar event is being hosted by the Uganda Section in Kampala where the SPE Africa student paper contest and Petrobowl (featuring other Sections in Africa) will be taking place. It also promises a field trip and a networking forum and will be the first of such an event being hosted in Uganda.

SECTION IN FOCUS – BENIN SECTION:

I want to wrap up this newsletter by spotlighting SPE Benin Section which has been on a massive campaign to bring exciting and educational events to the members in the catchment area! In February, the Section hosted a technical session titled: Recent coiled tubing innovations and interventions in Well control with Rob Tyre invited as a speaker.
They also hosted a lunch and learn session with Obinna Anyanwu (from NEPL) who spoke on the topic of best practices for wellbore, reservoir and facilities management in mature fields.

The section has the following events planned which I’m sure our members would find useful:

The 4th edition of BTS scheduled for April 25th and 26th 2024 will feature keynote Addresses on the theme, two (2) Panel sessions, and Technical Paper Presentations.

The ELW, a 2-day workshop, scheduled for 9th – 10th May 2024 will feature Panel Sessions, Topical Presentations, Team Bonding Exercises, Breakout Sessions, and a Dinner and Awards Night to wrap up the workshop.

Lunch & Learn 2024 Series
The Lunch and Learn Series is a monthly technical forum for knowledge sharing and skills transfer in a relaxed setting between YPs and Subject Matter Experts across the Oil and Gas Industry value chain.
