Tips and Traps for SAGD Thermal Modelling: Better Quality Production Estimates

Disciplines: Reservoir

Course Description

History has shown that some SAGD projects do not meet management and shareholder expectations. These expectations are normally based on thermal reservoir simulations. There are a number of issues that can change the accuracy of simulations. Many of them are not obvious. Basically, a day long presentation on what makes a good thermal SAGD simulation. Attendees will walk out with a specific list of things to watch for and how to implement these items.

Key objective is to know what makes a simulation more representative and how to go about achieving that objective. Also, how to evaluate whether a simulation is representative or not.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Build better models
  • Understand what needs to be done to make them better
  • Evaluate if simulation is representative

Why Attend

Understand how to make better SAGD predictions and leave with a series of specific checks to ensure that thermal reservoir simulations are accurate. This is critical for financial success in operating SAGD properties and companies.

Who Attends

The course is intended primarily for those working on SAGD simulations and should be applicable to people from just starting on thermal simulations to those that have experience with a number of projects. It would also be applicable to those working in management who want to understand what to check for in making decisions. This includes engineers, geologists and management.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be received no later than 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after the 14-day window will not be refunded. Refunds will not be given due to no show situations.

Training sessions attached to SPE conferences and workshops follow the cancellation policies stated on the event information page. Please check that page for specific cancellation information.

SPE reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule courses at will. Notification of changes will be made as quickly as possible; please keep this in mind when arranging travel, as SPE is not responsible for any fees charged for cancelling or changing travel arrangements.

We reserve the right to substitute course instructors as necessary.

Instructor

M.R. (Mike) Carlson, founded Applied Reservoir Enterprises Ltd., a petroleum engineering consulting firm specializing in reservoir engineering, numerical simulation, and economic evaluations in 1999. He has more than 35 years of experience in the petroleum industry, working for such corporations as Amoco Canada, Home Oil, Scientific Software-Intercomp, McDaniel & Associates Consultants Ltd, Silverwing Energy Inc., Petro-Canada, RPS Energy Canada and Alberta Oil Sands. A Geological Engineer from the University of Toronto, he is a member of the SPE, APEGGA, CWLS, and the CSPG. He has written over 25 papers and served as technical program committee chairman for the CIPC, SPE Gas Condensate Forum in League City, was a director of the National Board of the Petroleum Society of CIM, and was on the Industry Advisory Committee for the University of Regina Petroleum Engineering. He is the author of Practical Reservoir Simulation, (2003, PennWell). He has taught courses in 18 countries on reservoir simulation, reservoir management, and thermal reservoir simulation. Currently, he is actively involved in the development of a Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) projects in north-eastern Alberta working on caprock and solvent assisted SAGD. ARE continues to provide conventional reservoir engineering as well.
